Excellent question, thank you for asking.
If you thought that, you’re already ahead of me. I just thought it was funny to slap my first initial in place of the b in blog, while invoking the cranky negative connotation of the word, which I took to mean “toil” or “struggle.” But funny sounding. But then, it got me thinking . . . the fuck actually is a slog? Funny you should ask, Past Sam.
A slog, according to the ever handy dictionary.reference.com, does indeed mean “to toil” but more interestingly, it originally paired with “slug” (which makes me imagine the gloriously campy 1960s Batman TV series. Remember the one where Batman slugged and slogged the villain? Best episode) to mean a punch or deal heavy blows. And then THAT got me thinking . . . well, first I want to say it’s fascinating how words change. Like our identities, they are stories we repeat until they morph into a new reality or disappear into the ether. But I digress.
What I actually thought was “How wonderfully perfect.” Catchy titles are a necessity. Just ask Daenerys Stormborn of House Targaryen, Queen of the Andals and the First Men, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Chains, and Mother of Dragons, And you can go witty, corny, heartfelt, or important. Seeing as I lack all of those qualities and also given my unabashed love of Kevin Smith’s SModcast empire, turning the word “blog” into a word with my first initial that, through pain-staking research (see link above) I discovered had a multiple meanings, seemed too good to pass up.And those multiple meanings reference punching, fighting, and scrapping? Confluence like that, I don’t argue with.
All of this is to say: if identities are merely stories we tell ourselves, then I am a writer with a rebellious attitude who loves writing fantasy, writing rap lyrics, writing reviews and critiques, and both insightful and undoubtedly hilarious columns. I’m an idealistic cynic who believes that honesty, humility, and humor are the keys to universal understanding.
This Slog is my personal website and also the official place for me to archive my published material. I love pop culture and stories and words and writing. Here at the Slog I will publish all my reviews, columns, fiction (I have dreams of doing serial novels), poetry, and music. I want to build a community of like-minded individuals who share my love of storytelling. And punching. Too optimistic? Maybe, but positivity is far more useful than its twin. And much more fun.
Hey, I’m a person and you’re a person. We already have so much in common.
